What\u2019s more, as mining and manufacturing are electrified, life cycle emissions from EVs will drop even further.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>EVs are especially clean <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/9405696\/electric-vehicle-battery-recycling\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">when battery recycling is included<\/mark><\/a> (up to 95% of the material from an EV battery can be recycled).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Myth: EVs are more expensive than gas cars<\/mark><\/strong><br><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Fact: EVs are easily cheaper over their lifetime, and sometimes cheaper upfront<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/report\/the-scenic-route\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">EV drivers pay the equivalent<\/mark><\/a> of $0.40 per litre gas to charge their cars\u2014less than what drivers paid for gas during the gas wars of the &#8217;90s.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When considering the full cost of ownership over the course of a decade, from a car&#8217;s purchase price to fuel and maintenance, a typical EV saves drivers roughly $30,000 or about $3,000 a year.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Specifically, choosing an electric hatchback or SUV instead of a gas version will save you $28,500 over a 10-year ownership period. The same is true for sedans and trucks. Opting for a Tesla Model 3 instead of a Lexus ES will save you $38,000, while electric truck drivers will save a huge $40,000 over 10 years by choosing an electric F-150 instead of a gas-powered one.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Myth: EV batteries need replacing before the vehicle\u2019s end of life<\/mark><\/strong><br><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Fact: EV batteries have been shown to last for more than 20 years of driving<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All EVs sold today include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/features\/a31875141\/electric-car-battery-life\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">a battery warranty<\/mark><\/a> of at least eight years and 160,000 kilometres.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/electricautonomy.ca\/ev-supply-chain\/batteries\/2024-09-18\/ev-batteries-longevity-geotab-data\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">recent study<\/mark><\/a> found that EV batteries degrade just 1.8% per year on average\u2014meaning EV batteries can typically last more than 20 years.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Another\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.recurrentauto.com\/research\/how-long-do-ev-batteries-last\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">analysis<\/a>\u00a0found that EVs from 2016 and newer have less than a 1% battery replacement rate, and nearly all of these instances happen under warranty (except in rare cases of accident or damage).<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tesla <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2023\/04\/25\/tesla-update-battery-degradation\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">has claimed<\/mark><\/a> that the range on its Model S and X vehicles decreased by <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2018\/04\/14\/tesla-battery-degradation-data\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">just 12%<\/mark><\/a> after 321,000 kilometers of driving (these models are older and therefore offer insights based on real-world data).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Myth: EVs do not have enough range<\/mark><\/strong><br><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Fact: The average Canadian drives 60 kilometers per day\u2014far less than the average EV range of 480 kilometres<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-03-09\/average-range-for-us-electric-cars-reached-a-record-291-miles?sref=52ZWO6YM\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">average range<\/mark><\/a> of new EVs is now almost 480 kilometres\u2014and rising. Most Canadians drive less than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plugndrive.ca\/electric-vehicle-range\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">60 kilometres per day<\/mark><\/a>, while the average EV driver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pollutionprobe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Pollution-Probe-.Consumer-EV-charging-Experience.pdf\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">does between 80% to 90%<\/mark><\/a> of charging at home, usually just plugging in overnight for convenience. What\u2019s more, these driving requirements mean that Level 1 charging using a regular power outlet is <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/2634-4505\/ad590a\/pdf\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">likely adequate<\/mark><\/a> for most EV-owning households.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As Canada\u2019s fast-charging network grows, range and charging will become less of a concern for longer trips. There <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onroute.ca\/brands\/ev-chargers\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">are now<\/mark><\/a> fast chargers at 20 out of 23 ONroute rest stops in Ontario, while PetroCanada has already installed chargers along the TransCanada highway from Halifax to Victoria.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Government of Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/natural-resources.canada.ca\/energy-efficiency\/transportation-alternative-fuels\/zero-emission-vehicle-infrastructure-program\/21876\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">has committed<\/mark><\/a> to deploy 84,500 chargers by 2029 and is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oag-bvg.gc.ca\/internet\/English\/parl_cesd_202311_08_e_44371.html\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">on track<\/mark><\/a> to meet its 2026 target.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Myth: The electricity grid can\u2019t handle EVs<\/mark><\/strong><br><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Fact: With planning, grid-related issues are easily avoidable<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>While the switch to EVs will require provinces to plan for EV growth, other countries around the world (EVs account for some 80% of new cars sold in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/08\/business\/energy-environment\/norway-electric-vehicles.html\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Norway<\/mark><\/a>) have not experienced grid-related issues as a result of high EV adoption.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/natural-resources.canada.ca\/sites\/nrcan\/files\/Executive%20Summary%20ICF_English.pdf\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Canadian government study<\/mark><\/a> on the anticipated electricity needs of EVs found that they would represent 3%, 16%, and 22% of electrical power demand in 2030, 2040, and 2050, respectively. As the study states, \u201cThis number is significant, but since the growth is spread over 30 years, with most happening during the 2030 to 2050 timeframe, Canadian utilities have 10 years to refine the load forecast and plan for grid expansion.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Myth: EVs are not suitable for cold Canadian winters<\/mark><\/strong><br><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Fact: EVs are more reliable in cold weather than gas cars<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>EVs do lose some range during extreme cold. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recurrentauto.com\/research\/winter-ev-range-loss\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Some studies have shown range loss to be no more<\/mark><\/a> than 30% and as low as 8% for some makes and models. However, other <a href=\"https:\/\/theicct.org\/evs-china-getting-real-range-may23\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">studies of extreme cold<\/mark><\/a> have found it to be between 30% and 50%.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>EVs have considerably more range than required for most daily journeys (see myth five).<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What\u2019s more, cold weather can also increase gas car fuel consumption <a href=\"https:\/\/natural-resources.canada.ca\/energy-efficiency\/transportation-alternative-fuels\/personal-vehicles\/choosing-right-vehicle\/tips-buying-fuel-efficient-vehicle\/factors-affect-fuel-efficiency\/cold-weather\/21032\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">by up to 28%<\/mark><\/a>, effectively reducing range and increasing fuel costs.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In addition, most modern EVs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caaquebec.com\/en\/on-the-road\/advice\/tips-and-tricks\/tip-and-trick\/show\/sujet\/driving-an-electric-vehicle-in-winter\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">have battery heating options<\/mark><\/a> that preheat the battery before driving to reduce range loss.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unlike a gas car, EVs do not have problems starting in cold weather, and many EVs allow owners to remotely preheat the passenger compartment before driving.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Myth: EVs have a greater fire risk than gas cars<\/mark><\/strong><br><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Fact: Fires are more common in gas cars than EVs<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoinsuranceez.com\/gas-vs-electric-car-fires\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">study from insurance website AutoInsuranceEZ<\/mark><\/a> tracked car fires in the U.S., finding that electric vehicles saw just 25 fires per 100,000 EVs sold compared to 1,530 fires for every 100,000 gas cars. In other words, fires occurred in one in every 4,000 EVs compared to one in every 65 gas cars.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-black-color has-text-color
