Betting the province\u2019s economy on the fossil fuel may instead deliver rising electricity and natural gas prices for families while worsening climate change by locking out cleaner, cheaper energy sources.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Below is a summary of the risks of further LNG development to B.C.\u2019s economy, ratepayers and taxpayers, and efforts to reduce global emissions. Read our full report, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/report\/an-uncertain-future\/\"><strong><em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">An Uncertain Future<\/mark><\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong>, for more information.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">More supply than demand<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>LNG forecasts vary greatly, and key markets like Japan show a trend of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.customs.go.jp\/toukei\/info\/tsdl_e.htm\">declining imports<\/a> due to nuclear power restarts and renewable energy expansions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>B.C. faces significant competition. <a href=\"https:\/\/iea.blob.core.windows.net\/assets\/9d55e9e1-8f20-4fa3-9380-1161290b2cae\/WorldEnergyOutlook2023-Launchpresentation.pdf\">Global LNG export capacity is expected to grow by 43%<\/a> by the end of the decade, coinciding with B.C. projects coming online. Oversupply could be more pronounced in B.C.&#8217;s target markets, where competitors, offering lower-cost LNG, plan to increase export capacity by approximately 50% by 2030.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Future LNG demand is highly uncertain. The International Energy Agency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/net-zero-by-2050\">holds that<\/a> there is no need for investment in new fossil fuel supply in a world that reaches net zero by 2050.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"549\" src=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Figure4-JapansLNGimports-1-1024x549.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17137\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Figure4-JapansLNGimports-1-1024x549.webp 1024w, https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Figure4-JapansLNGimports-1-300x161.webp 300w, https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Figure4-JapansLNGimports-1-768x412.webp 768w, https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Figure4-JapansLNGimports-1-1536x824.webp 1536w, https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Figure4-JapansLNGimports-1-600x322.webp 600w, https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Figure4-JapansLNGimports-1-932x500.webp 932w, https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Figure4-JapansLNGimports-1.webp 1753w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">B.C. will pay a high price for LNG<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Expanding LNG comes with significant trade-offs, particularly in electricity usage.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If all six of B.C.\u2019s proposed LNG facilities were constructed, they would require approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pembina.org\/pub\/squaring-circle\">43 TWh of electricity annually<\/a>. This amount represents 69% of B.C.&#8217;s total electricity demand in 2022\u2014or about eight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sitecproject.com\/overview\">Site C dams<\/a> worth of power.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>B.C. is well-positioned to pursue <a href=\"https:\/\/natural-resources.canada.ca\/climate-change\/regional-energy-and-resource-tables\/british-columbia-regional-energy-and-resource-table-framework-for-collaboration-on-th\/british-columbia-regional-energy-and-resource-table-framework\">other economic opportunities<\/a>, such as critical minerals, metals, and clean hydrogen. <a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/poll-british-columbians-overwhelmingly-support-36b-electricity-grid-expansion-renewables-over-lng-and-the-need-for-an-energy-strategy\/\">Recent polls<\/a> indicate these alternatives are increasingly favoured by British Columbians over LNG.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expanding LNG could lead to higher household energy costs, job impacts, and potential taxpayer burdens.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Importing the electricity equivalent to just one Site C dam would cost B.C. ratepayers approximately $600 million annually.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The U.S. government anticipates that LNG exports could cause domestic natural gas prices to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/outlooks\/aeo\/IIF_LNG\/index.php\">increase by up to 28%<\/a> over the next 25 years.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Building LNG facilities could draw construction workers away from housing and clean energy projects, exacerbating labor shortages. There&#8217;s also a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/energy-technology-perspectives-2023\">risk of stranded assets<\/a> if LNG demand declines amid global energy shifts, potentially leaving taxpayers liable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"462\" src=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Polling-1024x462.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17138\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Polling-1024x462.webp 1024w, https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Polling-300x135.webp 300w, https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Polling-768x346.webp 768w, https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Polling-1536x693.webp 1536w, https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Polling-600x271.webp 600w, https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Polling-1108x500.webp 1108w, https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Polling.webp 1800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">LNG undermines B.C.\u2019s climate ambitions<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>LNG production is heavily polluting with emissions occurring throughout its supply chain, from extraction to liquefaction and combustion.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If all six proposed LNG projects proceed, their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pembina.org\/pub\/squaring-circle\">operational and upstream emissions<\/a> alone would amount to 40% of <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/environment\/climate-change\/planning-and-action\">B.C.&#8217;s 2030 emissions target<\/a>, and that\u2019s assuming most facilities use electricity.
