Heat pumps also provide cooling, which means you won\u2019t need a separate air conditioner in your home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two kinds of heat pumps: air source and ground source. The former are the most common and take heat from the ambient air. Even when the air outside feels cold, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/the-future-of-heat-pumps\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">there is still heat energy present that a heat pump can leverage<\/mark><\/a>. Ground source heat pumps take heat from underground, where geothermal energy provides a never-ending source.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Benefits of heat pumps<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Household savings<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/climateinstitute.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Heat-Pumps-Pay-Off-Unlocking-lower-cost-heating-and-cooling-in-Canada-Canadian-Climate-Institute.pdf\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Installing a heat pump is already the most cost-effective option for most Canadian households over the lifetime of the system<\/mark><\/a> due to higher efficiency. Specifically, standard air source heat pumps with a backup are generally more cost-effective than gas-fired heating with air conditioning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are federal and provincial rebates available for home energy upgrades to help with upfront costs. Check out our report, <a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Report_ACleanBill_Web.pdf\"><em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">A Clean Bill<\/mark><\/em><\/a>, to see what\u2019s available and where.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heat pumps with electric backup <a href=\"https:\/\/climateinstitute.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Heat-Pumps-Pay-Off-Unlocking-lower-cost-heating-and-cooling-in-Canada-Canadian-Climate-Institute.pdf\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">tend to be the lowest-cost options<\/mark><\/a>, particularly for single-detached homes and townhouses, in Vancouver, Halifax, and Montreal.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>By moving away from gas altogether, a household can remove its natural gas hook up, which <a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/report\/a-clean-bill\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">can save between around $170 and $470 a year<\/mark><\/a> depending on the province.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A household in St. John\u2019s, Newfoundland, that switches from baseboard heating to a heat pump could knock $860 a month off their bill.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A family living in a detached house in a Toronto suburb that adopts all-electric cars and a heat pump could save $550 on their monthly energy bills (including equipment costs) compared to one that remains reliant on fossil fuels. The same scenario in Vancouver could save a family $725 on their monthly energy bills.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Emissions savings and efficiency<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Heat pumps are key to decarbonizing buildings. In fact, electrifying heating with heat pumps could cut global emissions by <a href=\"https:\/\/iea.blob.core.windows.net\/assets\/4713780d-c0ae-4686-8c9b-29e782452695\/TheFutureofHeatPumps.pdf\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">over 500 million tonnes by 2030<\/mark><\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heat pumps, on average, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efficiencycanada.org\/canadian-heat-pump-myth-buster\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">operate three times more efficiently<\/mark><\/a> than electric resistance or electric boiler heating and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.efficiencycanada.org\/canadian-heat-pump-myth-buster\/\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/natural-resources.canada.ca\/energy-efficiency\/energy-star-canada\/about\/energy-star-announcements\/publications\/heating-and-cooling-heat-pump\/6817\">&nbsp;<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">two to five times more efficiently than a natural gas furnace<\/mark><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electricity-powered heat pumps <a href=\"https:\/\/iea.blob.core.windows.net\/assets\/4713780d-c0ae-4686-8c9b-29e782452695\/TheFutureofHeatPumps.pdf\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">can lead to nearly zero-emissions<\/mark><\/a> heating and cooling in regions where the electrical grids are powered by clean energy. Even when running on emissions-intensive electricity, <a href=\"https:\/\/iea.blob.core.windows.net\/assets\/4713780d-c0ae-4686-8c9b-29e782452695\/TheFutureofHeatPumps.pdf\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">heat pumps emit between 20% and 30 % less carbon than gas furnaces because of their high efficiency<\/mark><\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emissions savings from heat&nbsp; pumps <a href=\"https:\/\/iea.blob.core.windows.net\/assets\/4713780d-c0ae-4686-8c9b-29e782452695\/TheFutureofHeatPumps.pdf\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">will only increase<\/mark><\/a> with time as the grid becomes increasingly cleaner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Heat pumps cool as well as heat<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Heat pumps can address both heating and cooling needs, making them not only a great deal but also a tool to protect people during dangerously hot days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compared to dedicated air conditioning units, which are unable to heat, <a href=\"https:\/\/climateinstitute.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Heat-Pumps-Pay-Off-Unlocking-lower-cost-heating-and-cooling-in-Canada-Canadian-Climate-Institute.pdf\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">heat pumps offer energy savings benefits<\/mark><\/a> as they provide cooling along with heating, thus eliminating the need for an additional, separate appliance.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">What about the Canadian Winter?<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41560-022-01104-8\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Heat pumps are most popular in some of the coldest countries: Finland, Norway, and Sweden<\/mark>.<\/a>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/scanoffice.fi\/vttn-testiraportit-ilmalampopumppuvertailu\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Studies in Finland found several heat pump models that maintained heating efficiency at outside temperatures as low as -30C<\/mark><\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Since air source heat pumps work through compressing heat from the outside air, they are less efficient in cold weather. However, this does not prevent air source heat pumps from lowering emissions and costs even in cold climates. There are a range of new models of \u201ccold climate\u201d air source heat pumps that can withstand Canadian winters.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In a government-led trial in the Yukon, <a href=\"https:\/\/yukon.ca\/en\/air-source-heat-pump-monitoring-project-technical-report-2021-2022\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#3ac1cd\" class=\"has-inline-color\">heat pumps were successfully used at temperatures down to -29C<\/mark><\/a>.
