In response, many jurisdictions\u2014particularly in the EU\u2014are working to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.us2.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=14af3f96b3d5df9564694d168&amp;id=1d6211652e&amp;e=10ec4b50a9\">diversify energy supply away<\/a>&nbsp;from fossil fuels toward cleaner alternatives such as wind, solar and hydrogen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Evidence suggests that the energy transition is not only necessary to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, but also to address the energy insecurity and price volatility being felt by consumers around the world. Indeed, a number of studies suggest that Canadians will be spending less on energy in a net-zero world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This media brief summarizes available research on the potential impacts of the energy transition on household energy spending in Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1.<strong> The International Energy Agency\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.us2.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=14af3f96b3d5df9564694d168&amp;id=61e1f14381&amp;e=10ec4b50a9\"><strong>World Energy Outlook 2021 found that<\/strong><\/a><strong>, under current global policies, average household energy bills in advanced economies would decline between 2020 and 2050. Under a scenario where governments introduce policies to reach net zero by 2050, bills would decline even further.\u00a0<\/strong>While electricity bills are set to be higher in a net-zero world due to increased use of electricity, cost savings from energy efficiency and the lack of fossil-fuel-related expenditure (like gasoline for cars and natural gas for heating) mean that overall household energy bills are projected to be lower. More ambitious climate policies would reduce the financial impact of fossil fuel price shocks on households, such as the recent one in Europe.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"504\" src=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Asset-3-1024x504.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Asset-3-1024x504.png 1024w, https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Asset-3-300x148.png 300w, https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Asset-3-768x378.png 768w, https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Asset-3-1536x757.png 1536w, https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Asset-3-2048x1009.png 2048w, https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Asset-3-600x296.png 600w, https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Asset-3-1015x500.png 1015w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Similarly,\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.us2.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=14af3f96b3d5df9564694d168&amp;id=c0f0440920&amp;e=10ec4b50a9\"><strong>2022\u2019s World Energy Outlook<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0indicates that a net-zero scenario will require less consumer spending on energy in 2030 than in a scenario where only current policies are retained, and less overall than was spent in 2021.\u00a0<\/strong>The average cost per unit of electricity in a net zero 2050 is set to be 10% below 2021 levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. The Canadian Climate Institute\u2019s report on&nbsp;<em>Canada\u2019s&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.us2.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=14af3f96b3d5df9564694d168&amp;id=beca80e9b7&amp;e=10ec4b50a9\"><strong><em>Net-Zero Future<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong>, using modelling by Navius research, examined the proportion of household income spent on energy services (including home heating, electricity, and transportation). The report found that households across all income groups are likely to spend less in 2050 compared to 2020<\/strong>. This is due to three reasons:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Energy efficiency is set to improve, significantly reducing total energy use.<\/li><li>The additional costs of clean technologies would be more than offset by the savings derived from their reduced energy consumption. While the ability to pay higher upfront costs varies by income group, public policy and program solutions such as rebates or incentives can help address this concern.\u00a0<\/li><li>Economic growth nationwide from 2020 to 2050 would cause average incomes to rise, meaning even if energy spending holds steady in absolute terms for some households, the share of income spent on energy would decline.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Asset-2-1024x749.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14952\" width=\"-270\" height=\"-197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Asset-2-1024x749.png 1024w, https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Asset-2-300x219.png 300w, https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Asset-2-768x562.png 768w, https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Asset-2-1536x1123.png 1536w, https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Asset-2-2048x1498.png 2048w, https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Asset-2-547x400.png 547w, https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Asset-2-684x500.png 684w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. When the impacts of climate change are considered, affordability is negatively impacted, emphasizing the importance of climate action and clean energy to bring down economy-wide costs over the coming decades. Another study from the\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.us2.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=14af3f96b3d5df9564694d168&amp;id=6246ba5d3c&amp;e=10ec4b50a9\"><strong>Canadian Climate Institute<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0found that inaction on climate will have significant impacts on affordability.\u00a0<\/strong>According to the report, Canada\u2019s GDP could fall by 12% by the end of the century while household incomes could fall as much as 18% compared to a \u201cstable-climate\u201d scenario. The study projects that lower income households would be the most adversely affected.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. A&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.us2.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=14af3f96b3d5df9564694d168&amp;id=a6f038277e&amp;e=10ec4b50a9\"><strong>study from researchers<\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;at Oxford University found that switching from fossil fuels to renewables could save the world between US$5 trillion and US$12 trillion by 2050<\/strong>, emphasizing that \u201ca rapid green energy transition is likely to be beneficial, even if climate change were not a problem.\u201d The study argues, specifically, that there are minimal trade-offs associated with the energy transition and that \u201ca greener, healthier, and safer global energy system is also likely to be cheaper.\u201d When the social cost of carbon is included in the analysis (i.e. the costs to our economy in terms of damage from climate change per unit of carbon emitted), the savings are even higher, in the range of US$31 trillion to US$775 trillion depending on the assumed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.us2.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=14af3f96b3d5df9564694d168&amp;id=f739ee321d&amp;e=10ec4b50a9\">social cost of carbon<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.us2.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=14af3f96b3d5df9564694d168&amp;id=11a977de37&amp;e=10ec4b50a9\">discount rate<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6. In many cases, clean electricity already costs consumers less than fossil-fuel-powered electricity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A recent Clean Energy Canada report pointed out that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.us2.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=14af3f96b3d5df9564694d168&amp;id=e58510490d&amp;e=10ec4b50a9\">provinces with the lowest proportions of fossil fuels<\/a>&nbsp;on the grid also spend the least on electricity.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/14af3f96b3d5df9564694d168\/images\/80b1cc90-7077-53ea-6c17-eb4e047f89cd.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>South Australia gets&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.us2.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=14af3f96b3d5df9564694d168&amp;id=914fc82156&amp;e=10ec4b50a9\">62% of its electricity<\/a>&nbsp;from wind and solar combined with grid-scale battery storage. Since 2018, household energy bills have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.us2.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=14af3f96b3d5df9564694d168&amp;id=c2ecb19103&amp;e=10ec4b50a9\">declined some A$300<\/a>, while the state\u2019s grid is the only one in the country not to have lost a single hour of electricity.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7. Many climate solutions involve technologies that will save Canadians money overall, even if they cost more upfront. This is particularly relevant for transportation and buildings.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Earlier this year,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.us2.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=14af3f96b3d5df9564694d168&amp;id=d64e507e9f&amp;e=10ec4b50a9\">Clean Energy Canada analyzed<\/a>&nbsp;a number of popular electric car models, comparing their total ownership costs with that of gas equivalents. With just one exception, the electric version of every car analyzed was cheaper, usually significantly so. Specifically, the analysis found that the electric Hyundai Kona, Canada\u2019s second best-selling EV in 2021 (after the Tesla Model 3), is $17,800 cheaper to own than the gas-powered Kona with an average gas price of $2. Even at a gas price of $1.45, the Kona is still $10,500 cheaper. The electric Chevrolet Bolt offered even more cost savings, with the comparable gas-powered Toyota Corolla costing $22,000 more over its lifetime at a $2 gas price.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/14af3f96b3d5df9564694d168\/_compresseds\/f81dd716-6324-58b7-56d5-eec534cffd13.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Canadian families would save $151 annually per household on average with best-in-class energy efficiency policies in place, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.us2.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=14af3f96b3d5df9564694d168&amp;id=30b6382513&amp;e=10ec4b50a9\">2018 modelling<\/a>&nbsp;conducted by Dunsky Energy Consulting on behalf of Clean Energy Canada and Efficiency Canada. For families that retrofit their homes, savings would be far higher.
