Founded by Merran Smith in 2010, Clean Energy Canada works to accelerate Canada\u2019s clean energy transition by sharing the story of the global shift to renewable energy, clean technology, and sustainable industries.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our Story<\/h2>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”white”]Tides Canada launched our project in early 2010, and in March 2015 we became an initiative of the Centre for Dialogue at Simon Fraser University. At that time, the university named our executive director, Merran Smith, a fellow of the Centre.<\/p>\n

Our team members regularly speak at conferences and summits, testify before government bodies, and participate in public processes. Media frequently call upon staff members to comment and share perspective on news and trends in the domestic and global clean energy economy.<\/p>\n

As a registered Canadian charity, we are strictly non-partisan. As our Executive Director, Rachel brings nearly 20 years of experience in policy, politics, and law to advance clean energy solutions for Canada\u2019s sustainable economy. Before taking on this role, Rachel led our policy work across the energy transition and was a frequent commentator on energy policy, the electric vehicle market, and the broader energy transition. Prior to joining Clean Energy Canada, Rachel occupied numerous roles in two governments, serving most recently as Senior Special Advisor on Climate and Director of Legal Affairs to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change. She also served as policy advisor to the Prime Minister, and chief of staff to Ministers of Justice and Indigenous Services. She was counsel for both the Ontario and federal governments, specializing in Indigenous consultation in natural resource management. She has a background in the management of non-profit organizations, and holds a law degree BA from McGill University and was called to the bar in both Ontario and Quebec.<\/p>\n

Lyndsey provides the team with administration,\u00a0communications<\/span>, finance, and HR support. She began her career working for the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia and has since gained 13 years experience working for nonprofits. Before joining Clean Energy Canada, Lyndsey worked for organizations focussed on sustainable resource development, democratic engagement, generational equity, and government transparency. Lyndsey\u2019s passionate about making people feel seen and heard, and can often be found working on music and art projects with people she loves. She holds an honours diploma in journalism from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and a\u00a0communications<\/span>\u00a0degree from Royal Roads University.<\/p>\n

Jana is a senior policy advisor with the Clean Economy team, where she works on policy solutions for a thriving and sustainable Canadian economy. <\/span>Before joining Clean Energy Canada, she worked for two climate consulting companies in Berlin and as a freelance policy researcher in Canada. In these roles, she has provided policy analysis on a range of climate policy issues, including carbon pricing, forest protection, and hydrogen. Additionally, Jana has been active as a youth advocate for climate action, working with young people around the world and participating in international climate policy forums such as the COP27.\u00a0<\/span>Jana holds a summa cum laude bachelor’s from University College Utrecht and a master’s in International Affairs from the Hertie School. She is based in Toronto.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Catherine Jeffery is a policy advisor within the clean energy team, where she works on advancing policy analysis to drive clean energy growth in Canada. Before joining Clean Energy Canada, Catherine worked in the Ontario Public Service, conducting policy research on utility-scale renewable energy supply, supporting strategic development on distributed energy resources, and coordinating climate change regulation and legislation. She also has experience in the private sector at EcoVadis, where she worked hands-on with multinational corporations to build sustainable supply chain programs. Catherine holds an undergraduate degree from McGill University and an MA from Simon Fraser University’s School of\u00a0Communication<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Joanna works to develop and advance policy solutions that address climate change while promoting clean growth. Based in Ottawa, she regularly connects with thought leaders, industry stakeholders, and policymakers at the federal level. Before joining Clean Energy Canada, Joanna worked as a management consultant helping businesses identify and manage climate change risks and opportunities. She also practiced as a lawyer advising governments and industry on climate change and energy law. In 2017, she was named one of the Clean50 Emerging Leaders. Joanna has a BSc in natural resources from Cornell University and a JD from the University of Toronto.<\/p>\n

Natasha provides the team with strategic organizational development and fundraising support. She has nearly 20 years of experience in fundraising, communications, and public engagement, and has helped raise millions of dollars for leading Canadian universities and not-for-profit organizations. As principal of Mindful Communications, she has helped to develop and coordinate new environmental programs at Dalhousie University and the University of Ottawa. Her interest in sustainability began with her master\u2019s degree from the University of Leuven, Belgium, which focused on evolving environmental policies in an international context. Natasha is a 2004 alumna, and current volunteer organizer, of the Governor General\u2019s Canadian Leadership Conference.<\/p>\n

Keri is Clean Energy Canada\u2019s manager of reports and outreach. Before starting at Clean Energy Canada, she worked in the U.K. as a freelance science communicator. Keri has a background in research, which includes a master\u2019s degree in geology and a PhD in physical volcanology from the University of Bristol. Along with researching volcanoes, Keri worked as a writer for several research organizations and magazines, often covering issues related to climate science.<\/p>\n

Trevor leads Clean Energy Canada\u2019s insights and communications teams and has been with the organization since 2016. He also oversees many of Clean Energy Canada\u2019s public-facing reports and\u00a0opinion research. Before joining Clean Energy Canada, Trevor was a journalist, having worked as an online editor at Canadian Business<\/i>, as the associate editor of BCBusiness<\/i>, as the senior editor of Vancouver<\/i>\u00a0magazine, and briefly as a part-time data journalism professor at Humber College. In 2024, he was the recipient of a\u00a0Clean50 Emerging Leaders award. Trevor has a master\u2019s in journalism from Western University and a bachelor\u2019s degree in philosophy from the University of British Columbia.<\/p>\n

Stefan provides strategic leadership to Clean Energy Canada by advancing its work on clean technology and policy issues through rigorous research, data, and economic analysis. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Political Science at Simon Fraser University. Before joining Clean Energy Canada, Stefan carried out interdisciplinary research on climate policies in California and Europe at the University of British Columbia. He also worked as a Policy Officer at the European Commission, where he helped develop and implement the European Union\u2019s carbon market. Stefan holds a PhD in law from the University of British Columbia and a master\u2019s in international law from the University of Bern. He is the recipient of numerous research grants, scholarships, and awards from organizations that include the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions, Economics and Environmental Policy Research Network, Centre for International Governance Innovation, and the University of British Columbia.<\/p>\n

Evan works to bring climate action and innovation together to build stronger economies. Before joining Clean Energy Canada, Evan served as the Chief of Staff for the BC Green Caucus during the 2017-2020 minority government. He was deeply involved in the creation of CleanBC, British Columbia\u2019s climate strategy. Evan holds an undergraduate in political science with a minor in Human Dimensions of Climate Change. He holds a Certificate in Leadership, Organizing and Action: Leading Change from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government Executive Program.<\/p>\n

Ollie is a Program Manager at Clean Energy Canada where he works to develop and advance policies that reduce industrial emissions while promoting clean growth. Before joining Clean Energy Canada, Ollie worked as a research consultant focused on human capital and the innovation economy with an environmental and sustainability lens. Prior to his move to Canada, Ollie worked in policy and research for think tanks and non-profits in the U.K. He holds an MSc in Urban Studies from University College London, and a BSc in Human and Physical Geography from the University of Reading.<\/p>\n

Ciara is Clean Energy Canada\u2019s outreach coordinator and is based in Toronto. Prior to Clean Energy Canada, Ciara worked for climate action organizations and municipalities, where they focused on building networks, engaging the community, developing policy, and advocating for climate justice. Ciara\u2019s passion for the environment and\u00a0social<\/span>\u00a0justice led them to obtain an honours bachelor\u2019s degree in international development and globalization, with a minor in anthropology, as well as a master\u2019s in climate change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sicellia drives Clean Energy Canada’s digital campaigns as part of its communications team. She holds a bachelor\u2019s degree in communication studies and a certificate in sustainable development, both from Simon Fraser University. Prior to joining Clean Energy Canada in 2022, she worked in a range of writing, research, and digital communications roles across educational, academic, and international sustainable development settings.<\/p>\n
